English
College students must function in many worlds: worlds that demand literacy in written
and spoken language, and worlds that demand literacy in languages that are more visual
than verbal. The English faculty recognize these two worlds and provide students
with the critical and creative skills that can help them negotiate both the language-based
and image-driven media and messages shaping their worlds.
We offer rich and varied courses that address these various literacies, serving the
individual student, the academic community, and society at large. Our courses include
the study of literature, critical thinking, reading, writing, and media--all of which
enhance communication skills, deepen understanding of cultural traditions, and prepare
students for vocational programs as well as transfer to four-year colleges and universities.
Since the English major is so versatile and valuable, students who earn a degree often
enter fields such as law, education, public relations, human services, news and journalism,
radio and television, and advertising or corporate communications.
