Medical assistants (MA) have become an integral part of the healthcare team. They
require a wide variety of skills, from administering medications by injection to preparing and monitoring medical insurance
forms for services rendered.
There is a high demand for medical assistants in medical offices and clinics both locally and nationwide. Medical assisting is an expanding career area. Passing
the California Certifying Board for Medical Assistants examination, which qualifies you to become a certified medical assistant, will help
you attain professional recognition. Allan Hancock College also now offers National Healthcareer Association certification examinations for both medical assisting and medical coding and billing. NHA’s certification and
continuing education programs have helped nearly 200,000 individuals obtain better
pay, career opportunities, and job security.
Entry-level wages range from $14 to $18 per hour for medical assistants as cited by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Entry-level wages for medical coders may start about $25 per hour.

"I came to Allan Hancock College as an 'older' student. I was pleased to find out they offered the medical assisting program that I had been looking for. The campus has a relaxed, student-friendly atmosphere, and the teachers are well-educated and knowledgeable. I plan on becoming a certified medical assistant and hope to find a job in either an ob/gyn or Oncology office."
