Bookstore to Launch Children's Book Sale Oct. 22

Proceeds will benefit the Children's Center Lab.

OCTOBER 17, 2013 -- Children’s books make great gifts, and for the third year in a row, the Allan Hancock College Bookstore is making gift giving even more appealing by donating the proceeds from every children’s book sold at the Bookstore to the AHC Children’s Center Lab.

“We’re happy to donate all of the proceeds of this book drive to this very worthy cause,” said Lauri Bean, the Bookstore's general merchandise/tradebook assistant.

A special event to kick off the sale will be held Tuesday, Oct. 22, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the west patio of the Student Center.  At 10:40, children from the center will have fun creating chalk art on the sidewalks of the Commons, followed by story time for children and adults at 11 a.m.  Light refreshments will be served.

All of the children’s books currently in stock were purchased by the Bookstore from Scholastic and Nacscorp book distributors.  More than 250 titles are available, including an assortment of Hispanic titles, and prices range from $4 to $12.99.

“We are fortunate to be the beneficiaries of this great collaboration,” said Yvon Frazier, Children’s Center director.  “Books provide indispensable opportunities for both center staff and families to promote literacy as part of a child’s everyday experience.”

Funds from the sale will finance the purchase of new books to replace old and damaged titles and to update the center’ library, Frazier said.  More than 100 children have access to the library at the center and are encouraged to choose any book to read at any time.

“Reading aloud to children every day helps them acquire the skills needed to be ready for school and later academic success,” Frazier added.

The Allan Hancock College Bookstore is located in the Student Center on the Santa Maria campus and is open Monday through Thursday, 7:45 a.m. to 6:45 p.m., and Friday, 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Starting Dec. 19, the store will be open Monday through Thursday only.  Check the website at for holiday hours or call 922-6966 ext. 3238 for more information.
