CLEP Frequently Asked Questions

What is the CLEP test used for?
Some colleges accept passing CLEP scores in place of introductory classes.  This can save time and money for students.  It is beneficial if you are only a few credits short of meeting graduation requirements.  It is your responsibility to contact other colleges to determine what CLEP scores they accept.  If you would like to use a CLEP exam in place of an Allan Hancock College course to meet a specific degree or certificate requirement, you will need departmental approval.  See an Allan Hancock College counselor for a course waiver form.

How much do CLEP exams cost?
A fee of $80 per test payable to CLEP and a $35 administrative fee per test payable to AHC.

How may I pay for the CLEP tests?
If you choose a credit card for payment, the information is entered into the testing program.  It is then sent electronically along with the CLEP test.  Educational Testing Services, on behalf of the College Board, maintains strict security standards.  A check or money order is also an acceptable form of payment.  The Allan Hancock College Testing Center cannot accept a credit/debit card or cash for the $35 administrative fee.

Do I have to come in to register or do anything in advance before the test date?
No.  Allan Hancock College Testing Center staff will take your information over the phone and you can complete any needed information the day of the test.  Bring two forms of ID (a driver’s license, California ID, passport, or current military ID) that have current pictures and bring the means for payment.  A student/college picture ID is acceptable as a secondary form of ID.

What do I do to reschedule a test?
Contact the Testing Center at (805) 922-6966, ext. 3364 to reschedule a test date.  If you cancel the exam or do not show up and you have prepaid CLEP, the fee to CLEP can be refunded, but the administrative fee in not refundable.

Can I take more than one test in a day?
Generally, you can schedule two exams per test day, but you must register for each test separately.  This means you will pay the CLEP fee and administrative fee for each test.  You will have to reenter the testing program each time for the 90-minute tests.

What if I think I performed poorly on the test and want to cancel it before it is sent?
You have the option of canceling the test at the end of the exam before you see your scores.  No fee refunds will be made.  Canceled exams cannot be taken again for six months.

If I do not pass a specific test, can I repeat it?
You can repeat the test, but you must wait six months and pay all fees again.

How soon will I have my scores?
You will receive a printout as soon as you complete the test with the exception of College Composition and College Composition Modular.  Your test will be sent to CLEP electronically and they will send the scores to the college/s you designated within a few days if you pay CLEP by credit card the day of the test.  If you pay by check, they have to receive it by mail before sending your scores.

What are passing scores for the different CLEP tests?
The average passing score is 50 in all subjects except foreign languages.  Colleges have the option of accepting different scores.  Check with your college to verify passing scores for that institution.

What if I need a bathroom break during the test?
The administrator can lock the test during this short break, BUT the timer will continue to run while you are away, so you will lose that time for the test.

Are there special accommodations for CLEP testing?
Yes.  You must obtain authorization for accommodations in advance from the Testing Center.  This documentation should be from an administrator at the school where the examinee is enrolled, or an appropriate health care provider, and must be on official letterhead.  CLEP can also be contacted at 1-800-257-9558.

What if something happens during the test, like the power goes out?
The test administrator can reboot the computer and log back into the test at the same place you stopped.  The timer will not restart until you are logged back in.
