Languages & Communication
The Allan Hancock College Languages & Communication is an interdisciplinary department
that serves the student, the academic community, and society at large in all areas
of literacy, communication, and language development. The various programs included
in this department are American Sign Language (ASL), English as a Second Language
(ESL), Spanish, French, Italian, and Speech Communication. These individual programs
offer rich and diverse courses and workshops to deepen students’ understanding of
multicultural traditions, to provide breadth of knowledge appropriate for many degree
and programs, and to prepare students for vocational goals and/or transfer to four-year

"I came from Mexico at age17, which meant I not only had to learn English at a High School level, but had to prepare for college-level courses. During my first semesters at AHC I enrolled in ESL, and made extensive use of their writing lab, which I believe was critical in my transition to transfer level classes. Engineering is a difficult major on its own, but learning all those concepts and terminology while just getting out of ESL classes was a challenge. AHC professors, counselors and programs were key to my success."
