Firefighter Internship Program

A 17-week course. This is a Career Work Experience (WEE) course that places Allan Hancock College students in Fire Departments to work side by side with professional Firefighters. The course schedule requires that students work at least 180 hours over the semester to earn 3 units towards their A.S. Degree in Fire Science or Certificate of Achievement. Work schedules will be developed on an individual basis. This is an “unpaid” internship. An example of the work expectation would be working one 10-hour shift per week. A normal shift would be from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fire Departments may also offer 24-hour shifts. There is also a mandatory orientation session at the Public Safety Training Complex.

A 17-week, 13 week or 8-week course. This is a Career Work Experience (WEE) course that allows for students already in the profession to earn college credit towards their A.S. Degree in Fire Science or Certificate of Achievement. Students will enroll in their chosen length course and attend their normal work schedule. Students must work at least 225 hours over the semester to earn 3 units. Additional hours worked can allow more college credit to be earned. This is a “Paid” Internship as the student is already employed with a fire agency. There is also a mandatory orientation that can be attended in-person or scheduled virtually with the Career Center.
