Hancock Debuts New Interactive Campus Art Map
SEPTEMBER 7, 2022--
Allan Hancock College staff, faculty, and students, as well as the local community, can now explore public art on the college’s campuses thanks to a new, interactive online map.
The college debuted the map on its website on Sept. 9. The interactive map allows users to view murals and other artwork displayed at Hancock’s Santa Maria campus and Lompoc Valley Center. The map was created by the college’s Art on Campus Committee in partnership with Hancock’s Information Technology Services Department.
“Hancock’s campuses feature a myriad of wonderful public art created by many talented artists,” said Hancock Fine Arts Department Chair and instructor John Hood. “This interactive map is just another way to share these works with the public and remind them that this fantastic art is all around them.”
The map currently features 15 on-campus artworks in a variety of mediums including murals, paintings, sculptures, and ceramics. Users can simply click on the map to view a photo of the art and learn more about the piece and the artist who created it.
Many of the art included on the map was created by current and former students and staff. Notable works include a series of figure drawings by retired Fine Arts Instructor Marti Fast, ceramic sculptures by former Hancock instructor Ed Harvey, a large mural on the outside of the college’s library painted by former AHC student Cheryl Clark and the Centennial Vessel; a large-scale ceramic sculpture that was sculpted by artist Scott Semple and painted by Hancock alumnus Aaron Cribbs.
The college’s Art on Campus Committee provides leadership for public art projects at Allan Hancock College in order to provide access to a variety of high-quality artistic experiences for students, staff, and the community. The committee is comprised of fine arts faculty, as well as college staff and administrators.
