Hancock Hosts Chicano Art Exhibit and Free Community Arts Event

SEPTEMBER 30, 2024-- Allan Hancock College’s Ann Foxworthy Gallery is inviting the community to celebrate art, culture, and creativity through its upcoming "Nuestra Vida en Arte" Chicano art exhibit and accompanying Community Arts Family Day this October.
The exhibit will run at the Foxworthy Galley from Oct. 14 through Dec. 14. The Family Arts Day will take place on Saturday, October 19, from 1-4 p.m. at the college’s Santa Maria campus.
"Nuestra Vida en Arte" is a remarkable collection curated by renowned collector Tomas Sánchez and highlights the pivotal role of Chicano art in shaping both cultural identity and popular culture. The collection features work from several iconic artists who have been a quintessential part of the Chicano art movement including Frank Romero, Diane Gamboa, Roberto “Tito” Delgado, and more.
“As an educator and college professor, I feel that each piece of the collection reflects a segment of the Chicano Movement, between 1965 to 2000,” said Foxworthy Gallery Director Laura-Susan Thomas. “This movement encompassed a wide range of societal, cultural, political, economic, gender, regional, and religious issues relevant to Chicanos during this period.”
The college will also host its first-ever Community Arts Family Day on October 19, a free public event that promises a day of fun, creativity, and community connection. Hosted in collaboration with One Community Action, this free public event will have live music by local artists, a car show, and hands-on art activities for kids. Attendees will also be able to take family-friendly tours of the "Nuestra Vida en Arte" exhibit and even participate in a gallery scavenger hunt.
“This is an opportunity for families to come together and celebrate creativity and the arts in our valley,” said Thomas. “We are excited to see our community gathering, and getting inspired by this fun event.”
