Student Learning Outcomes: Student Services
The Student Services Division at Allan Hancock College has identified learning outcomes to support student programs and services. The assessment of those program learning outcomes and activities enables the college to understand its effectiveness and improve student services and support functions.
Program Learning Outcomes:
ADMISSIONS & RECORDS
PLO 1: Students will be able to navigate the admission and registration process to reach their academic goal.
- Activity 1: After interaction with an A&R staff member, students will be able to successfully register into classes.
- Activity 2: Students will demonstrate an awareness of registration deadlines by registering for classes by the census date.
AIM to Dream Center
PLO 1: Undocumented students and students from mixed-status families will learn how to navigate the educational system to achieve their academic goals.
- Activity 1: Students will learn about financial aid opportunities to help pay for tuition and fees.
- Activity 2: Students will be aware of their residency status to learn how to qualify for instate tuition and eligibility for support programs.
- Activity 3: The dream club will provide activities that lead to students' sense of belonging.
- Activity 4: Student will be able to identify a major/career to develop a Student Education Plan.
- Activity 5: After attending a workshop/event or meeting with an AIM staff, students will gain knowledge on how to navigate one of the following: My Hancock portal, Rosetta Stone, and utilize email.
Basic Needs Center
Cal-SOAP
PLO 1: Students will receive services to complete a financial aid application to enroll in postsecondary education.
- Activity 1: Increase FAFSA/CADAA applications at Cal-SOAP partnership schools in SB county (Cabrillo, Lompoc, Maple, SY, SM, PV, RH, Delta).
- Activity 2: Review financial aid award letters to mediate financial aid barriers.
CAN/TRIO SSS
PLO 1: Students will utilize program support services to improve college persistence and degree attainment.
- Activity 1: Participants will be able to identify and utilize available resources and services to assist them in navigating college to remain in good academic standing.
- Activity 2: Participants will identify a major and develop a Comprehensive Student Education Plan (CSEP) within one year of admittance into the program.
- Activity 3: Participants will be able to explore and identify long-term career goals.
- Activity 4: Participants will explore financial aid resources to achieve their goal.
- Activity 5: Associate degree transfer (ADT) participants will increase transfer understanding by exposure to 4-year university cultures and admissions requirements to help them choose their preferred transfer school(s).
career Center
PLO 1: Students will be able to create pathways to industries by exploring careers/majors through various programs and services.
- Activity 1: Students will be able to identify a major/career to develop a Student Education Plan.
- Activity 2: Students will be able to navigate online career center resources (Jobspeaker, Career Assessments, SucessNet, DegreeWorks, Wingspans, etc)
- Activity 3: Students will be able to create a resume, cover letter, and develop interviewing skills.
- Activity 4: Undecided students will complete the Career Cruising & MBTI assessment before meeting with a counselor.
- Activity 5: After attending Career Expo, students will be aware of local job opportunities, Hancock services, and areas of interest.
COUNSELING
PLO 1: Students will be able to navigate the educational system and student support services to enhance their success.
- Activity 1: After attending a Student Success Workshop, students are able to identify support services appropriate for their success.
- Activity 2: Students are able to identify barriers to their academic success and identify
strategies and necessary resources/services (i.e, an appropriate course load to support academic success).
- Activity 3: Students are able to navigate online counseling resources (AHC website, DegreeWorks, Dynamic forms, SuccessNet, etc.).
PLO 2: Students will be proactive in the decision-making process by identifying the necessary coursework and articulating their personal enrichment and/or educational goals.
- Activity 4: Student will be able to identify a major/career to develop a Student Educational Plan by the end of their first year.
EOPS+
PLO 1: Students will utilize program support services to improve college persistence and goal attainment.
- Activity 1: Participants will learn about available resources and services through program orientations.
- Activity 2: Participants will identify a program and develop a Comprehensive Student Education Plan (CSEP) within one year of admittance into the program.
- Activity 3: Participants will be able to explore and identify long-term career goals.
- Activity 4: Assist students in navigating financial aid applications, appeals, etc. to complete the financial aid process.
- Activity 5: Participants will be exposed to 4-year university cultures and admissions requirements to help them choose their preferred transfer school(s).
FINANCIAL AID
PLO 1: Students will be aware of the financial aid resources available to them and the related processes for application.
PLO 2: Students will be able to independently complete the required applications and forms for financial aid.
- Activity 1: As a result of students accepting approval of an SAP appeal students will know of the terms and conditions of their probationary period.
- Activity 2: As a result of students taking out a student loan they will gain understanding of the requirements, rights and responsibilities, and repayment obligations associated with acquiring a federal student loan.
- Activity 3: Hancock Promise Students will understand how to complete their financial aid file requirements and set-up their BankMobile accounts to receive their disbursement in a timely manner.
LEARNING ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (LAP)
PLO 1: Students will be able to navigate the available LAP services in order to enhance their educational success.
- Activity 1: Request and use a disability related accommodation in a timely manner.
PLO 2: Students will demonstrate and discuss LAP services that are related to their disability
- Activity 2: Identify accommodations that are related to his or her disability.
- Activity 3: Use the learning strategies recommended by his or her disability specialist.
- Activity 4: Use adaptive computer technology related to disability.
LIBRARY SERVICES
- SLO 1: Navigate a library to find a variety of resources to answer information needs.
- SLO 2: Define an information need by formulating a research question, problem, or issue in a manner that others in the discipline can readily understand.
- SLO 3: Use the research process to efficiently locate an appropriate source of information for a problem or question.
- SLO 4: Evaluate the quality of information sources for bias, currency, authority, accuracy, and coverage.
- SLO 5: Use information ethically by citing sources and avoiding plagiarism.
NONCREDIT student success & support
PLO 1: Students will be able to navigate the educational system to reach their goal.
- Activity 1: After attending a noncredit new student orientation, students will schedule a counselor/staff appointment for follow-up services.
- Activity 2: Students will understand the transition process from NC to CR courses.
- Activity 3: Students will access NC counseling services to navigate the education system of the college.
- Activity 4: Student will be able to identify a major/career to develop a Student Education Plan.
- Activity 5: After attending a workshop/event, students will gain knowledge to support their academic, career, and/or personal goal.
STUDENT Engagement & Community Outreach
PLO 1: Students will learn how to organize, plan, and effectively implement events to enhance student life.
- Activity 1: ASBG and Leadership students will organize and participate in civic and community causes (i.e., Bulldog Bow-Wow, Diversity Day, Cinco de Mayo, Christmas toy and food drive and blood drives.)
PLO 2: Students will learn to advise, motivate and inform the campus of the importance of getting connected, engaged, and directed regarding campus involvement.
- Activity 2: ASBG and Student Club members will be able to understand the value and the benefits of being involved in student life and how it leads to their success.
- Activity 3: Students in the Leadership classes will learn about civic engagement, parliamentary procedures, local, state and national governing processes.
student HEALTH SERVICES
PLO 1: Students will have an increase in understanding of their current health condition and demonstrate academic improvement after accessing student health services.
- Activity 1: Students accessing health services will score a minimum of 80% in retention rates.
- Activity 2: Students accessing health services will score a minimum of 70% in success rates.
- Activity 3: Students will have the opportunity to connect with community agencies for further support and services.
TUTORIAL services
- SLO 1: Students will successfully complete the courses in which they receive tutorial services.
- SLO 2: Students will be able to identify their own learning styles.
- SLO 3: Students will be able to identify and articulate their content related questions.
- SLO 4: Students will be able to break down the subject matter into manageable steps to arrive at solutions.
- SLO 5: Students will be able to apply study skills techniques for reading textbooks and other course materials.
- SLO 6: Students will be able to utilize at least one notetaking method appropriate for their learning style.
- SLO 7: Students will be able to prioritize their study time.
- SLO 8: Students will be able to determine how much time is needed to be successful in a specific course.
- SLO 9: Students will be able to make and use a time management schedule.
UNIVERSITY TRANSFER CENTER (UTC)
PLO 1: Students will utilize transfer support services to navigate the educational system to reach their transfer goal.
- Activity 1: Students will develop a Comprehensive Student Education Plan (SEP) to meet their transfer goal.
- Activity 2: Provide targeted outreach to increase engagement with the University Transfer Center.
- Activity 3: Students will learn how to utilize key transfer tools such as assist.org and TransferBound.
- Activity 4: Students will access the University Transfer Center to obtain support in navigating the transfer process.
- Activity 5: After engaging with the UTC at an event, students will schedule a counselor appointment for follow-up services.
Veteran Success Center
PLO 1: Students will understand how to access their Veterans Affairs (VA) Educational Benefits to achieve their academic goals.
- Activity 1: Students will be aware of how to access and utilize their earned VA educational benefits.
- Activity 2: Students will be able to identify a major/career to develop a Comprehensive Student Education Plan (CSEP).
- Activity 3: Identify and inform students with disabilities about Learning Assistance Program (LAP) services and accommodation.
- Activity 4: After attending a Veteran Success Center orientation, students are able to identify relevant support services for their success.
- Activity 5: Identify and refer students who can benefit from utilizing tutorial services.
