Pre-Paramedicine Courses at Allan Hancock College
Are you planning to pursue a career as a paramedic? Start your journey with us at Allan Hancock College by building a strong foundation in prehospital care through our Pre-Paramedicine courses. Designed to equip aspiring paramedics with essential knowledge and skills, these courses provide the advanced medical groundwork needed for success in the field and in our Paramedicine Program.
Beginning in 2026, successful completion of all four Pre-Paramedicine courses will
be required for entry into the AHC Paramedicine Academy. These courses include:

EMSP 300 – Anatomy & Physiology for Prehospital Personnel

EMSP 301 – Introduction to ECG Rhythm Analysis & Interpretation for EMS Professionals

EMSP 302 – Introduction to Pharmacology for Prehospital Professionals

EMSP 304 – Medical Mathematics for the Prehospital Professional
These courses are also designed to bridge the gap for newer or less experienced EMTs—especially
those with limited exposure to real-world prehospital care. Students are introduced
to the basic fundamentals of advanced prehospital concepts, preparing them for the
rigors of paramedicine training and beyond.
Flexible by design, students may enroll in all four courses in a single semester or
spread them out over multiple terms. Courses will be offered every Fall and Spring
semester beginning Fall 2025 to help you stay on track and reach your goals.

🧠 EMSP 300 – Anatomy & Physiology for Prehospital Personnel
Lay the foundation for everything you’ll need to know as a paramedic with this comprehensive
deep dive into the human body. This course explores essential anatomy and physiology
from head to toe, covering all major body systems and the cellular processes that
keep them running. Designed specifically for prehospital providers, you’ll build the
language, structure, and system-level understanding needed to make sense of complex
patient presentations. Perfect for both first-time learners and those looking to refresh
their medical science knowledge, this course brings the human body to life in a way
that’s engaging, practical, and directly connected to EMS practice.
❤️ EMSP 301 – Introduction to ECG Rhythm Analysis & 12-Lead Interpretation for EMS Professionals
Get to the heart of cardiac care—literally. This exciting course gives you the skills
to read and interpret ECGs with confidence, a must for any medical professional in
training. You’ll learn to recognize life-threatening rhythms, understand the principles
of cardiac electrophysiology, and master 12-lead ECG interpretation. From atrial fibrillation
to STEMIs, you’ll be prepared to identify and respond to a wide range of cardiac emergencies.
Using real-world case scenarios and hands-on learning strategies, EMSP 301 helps you
build the critical thinking and rhythm recognition needed in fast-paced prehospital
environments.
💊 EMSP 302 – Introduction to Pharmacology for the Prehospital Professional
Step into the world of emergency medications with this dynamic and practical introduction
to prehospital pharmacology. Whether it’s administering epinephrine during a cardiac
arrest or calculating pediatric doses in the field, this course gives you the tools
and knowledge to do it safely and effectively. Learn how drugs work, how to give them,
and how to avoid common errors. With a strong focus on real EMS scenarios, you’ll
explore medications used for cardiac, respiratory, neurological, and trauma-related
emergencies. This course is your first step in becoming a confident and competent
EMS medication provider.
📐 EMSP 304 – Medical Mathematics for the Prehospital Professional
Precision can save lives—especially when it comes to medications and fluids in emergency
care. This course arms you with the essential math skills every future paramedic needs
to confidently calculate drug dosages, IV infusion rates, and fluid resuscitation
plans. You’ll learn to convert units, perform weight-based dosing, and apply life-saving
formulas like the Parkland Formula for burn patients. Through real-world EMS scenarios
and hands-on exercises, you'll turn numbers into confident decisions under pressure.
